Prompt:
Television networks are assigning reporters to a new beat this election year: people who don’t watch the evening news. With polls showing a surge in primary-season ballots cast by voters under 30, media outlets are out to convert the newly energized voters into viewers.
Are you following the presidential campaign? If so, how—on television, in newspapers and newsmagazines, and/or online? What are your preferred sources for news? Have you watched any television news during the campaign season? If so, what have you watched, and was it interesting to you? If not, why not? What do you think TV news shows and cable news networks can and should do to appeal to younger viewers? Why do you think a majority of young voters prefer Barack Obama over John McCain? Why do you think that voters aged 65 and older are more evenly divided between the two?

No I am not following the presidential elections. I have never found polotics interesting. They have always caused me to bore myself almost to tears =]. For them to grab the attention of younger veiwers they would have to lake it fit more into their time period and their interests. To younger voters many of them may be choosing Obama for a change. He is a well respected man that can make many changes and improvments for our country. As people get older they are usually more compelled to vote for the canidates prefrence of government and their beliefes.
Well, I must say that I do not watch the campaign that is going on right now. I have heard about it and i do pay attention but in all honesty it really doesn't phase me any. I'm not a big fan of politics what so ever. I do pay attention to them but they really don't mean anything. As long as the country is happy and everything is going well i just hope it stays that way and hope that whoever the leader may be knows how to run the country very well. Also as long as it isn't Bush anymore I will be ok because he is just flat out stupid. :)
I have been following it some what. I think people lean more towards Obama because he might be around longer than McCain. If i was old enough to vote; i don't know if i would even vote because its a hard descion Iget my info about the elections mostly from TV and newspapers. People over age 65 probably are divided between the two because they have seen so many good old and young presidents come into office. And so its a hard thing to decide for them. Most of my family is not going to vote because they just dont know who to pick.
I am not following the presidential election for a few reasons, the main reason is i see very little need to be informed about something that i cannot participate in. In the next presedential election i will pay more attention but for now I'll just take whoever gets elected.I think that the campaigns should do a better job of transitioning to the internet. More interactive "fun" things in relation to voting and encouraging young people to vote are needed to really entice them into voting. As for why so many are supporting Obama, I think he is a choice that represents change, and i think alot of people are very interested in change in the way things are run in this country, espescially compared to the way things have been done for the last 8 years.
No I have not been following the presidental elections. I've watched a few news programs and listened to a few of Obama's speeches... but i get lost very easily. Obama is probably more popular with the younger people because he, himself is younger and well-mannered. In my opinion, I think all of the "promises" the compaigners make are a bunch of lies. I think they'll say anything the people want to hear in order to get the position they want. Politics are very boring in my opinion... and I don't plan on watching any more programs on it.
Truthfully, I haven't been following the presidential campaign. It's not that I find it boring, there's just so much to keep up with! I know that the Democratic party representative is senator Barack Obama, and that the Republican parties representative is senator John McCain. I also know that Obama chose Biden as his VP. How I keep up with this? My father. When it's guiet at dinner I ask him about politics so I have an idea of what's going on in the world. I've watched the announcement of Barack's running mate, and that's about it. I've seen the polls on television, but that was when Hilary Clinton was trying to grab a spot on the ballot. There isn't much cable news networks can do to pull in younger viewers. I believe that they prefer Barack Obama because he is younger and of the african american race. Older voters are more evenly divided because senator John McCain because he's an older man, and a republican.
Umm...I think they should make the news about the campaigns less BORING!!!I would watch it but i don't even like watching the news.I rather read it the watch it.To me it's way to boring and I don't know I'm just different.
Well no I actually do not watch the campaign. My parents have been talking about it and watching it on T.V. I dont watch it at all though i find it very boring, it doesnt intrest me at all. Im not a fan of politics either so why watch? I just hope they pick someone that actually will be a better president than bush!
I have kept up a little with it and I have my own oppinion. I don't think they will elect Obama.I think McCain will be elected before because the world is still racist, and McCain was in a p.o.w. camp so people would feel safer with him in charge.I think Obama would try to do to much stuff to America that many citizens won't like so sadly enough I think he will be assassinated within the first couple of year.
I dont follow the election just because politics really bore me. Right now i am not old enough to vote and my opinion doesnt matter. If i wanted Obama and McCain was elected theres nothing i can do. Well there is but still no one would care... I will be old enough to vote in the next election so thats when i will pay attention, but for now ill just let the older people pick who they think will be best for the US
I havent been listening to all that president stuff. but my mom tell me she like Obama. She says that obama will help more with the imigration problem. So i guess i like Obama then, im not realy sure I have to do a little more studying. I guess i won't realy like that stuff intill im old enought to vote.
Ps. Obama's wife is hotter then Hilery
I myself am not following the presidential elections. I will hear something on each candidate once in a while and I'll just kind of listen in, but I don't really care about it. I honestly hate talking about politics. It bores me. Many of the commercials for the presidential candidates just talk bad about the other candidates, and to me, that is not a way to represent our country. Most of those commercials are from McCain. I think younger voters are inspired by Obama. He would be the first African American president and he is a very respectful man who seems like the type who would be more of a help to our generation. McCain seems like the type that won't really be able to do much because he doesn't really understand what is going on in the lives of younger people. The 2009-2012 president will hopefully focus on the most struggling generation and I believe that person will be Barrack Obama.
No i did not watch the presidential campain at all. I really don't care about the presidential campain.I also don't care who becomes president as long as every one dosn't start saying sooner or later that the president is stupid. Also as long as it is not Bush I will be happy. Just between me and everyone who reads this I beleive Bush is a DE DE DE.
Uh I think that the news should start showing more stuff about how Youger viewers can be successful. The news always shows all the bad stuff that is going on, jus alot of negative stuff. Maybe Like once a week they could have like a thing about better ways to get through high school or tips on how to take better notes in class. Some students cant pay attention in class they could give tips on how to stay focused when your larning about something thats not that interesting! I think more young people would like the news more if it was so negative ... I know I would !
No, I am not following the presidential campaign. I never really pay attention to that kind of stuff, I'd rather watch cartoons. ^^ Anyway, I mostly hear about the campaign from my dad. He hates George Bush and wants Obama to win the election. So naturally, I will just agree with what he says. Also, in the mornings my parents watch the news and I will hear some things about the campaign, I still don't really care, but I do hear some things. So yeah, the campaign is not interesting to me, but I am interested and who will win. As for why older people are evenly divided between Obama and McCain, how would I know, ask them. I guess maybe they don't like change and just want someone they think will take care of buissness.
I belive most younger people in america are preffereing Obama, over the other canadate is because they believe its time for a african american president. Most the of the african american teens believe its time for their race to be in power. Another reason alot of younger people are preffering Obama is because alot of people are thinking that it is time for a change, and if we have change it could bring alot of better things along with it. Personally I don't care who wins, since i'm not following the election.
Im not really paying attention to the presidential election. I believe that people are choosing Obama over McCain because people dont want an older person being president. They also dont want another Republican being president. they arnt to anctiouse about having a second Bush. People are also worried about McCains mentalness.(Is that a even word? It is now!)I was listening to the radio and they were saying that people around McCains age are more at risk for alzhimers disease.
hahahah Jose.
Obama's wife is WAY out of your leage hun.
I haven't exactly been following the presidential campaign lately. I don't really believe there is one person who is fit to run an entire country. No one is perfect and on some occations when I've watched the news, they have talked about the presidential candidates lying, arguing or back stabbing to get further in the race. I believe people are voting more for Barack Obama because they want a younger president and they think that just because President Bush is a Republican, then all Republicans become wrong for the job. I have no opinion on who should become president because who am I to decide what is right for this country?
Caitlin S. comment was very good ! I agree with her all the way. Obama is going to be a great leader and many younger people wil probably look up to him more than any other President ! =] ...
ya i dont watch all that stuff its not very interesting i really dont care who is president as long as they do a good job even though obama might get assinated but who knows.
p.s. jose is right
I have seen that there are these funny looking people on t.v. They are talking about there canpain and i don't know whay they are. Plus they are mud slinging. I feel that if you are running for president then you wouldn't have to do stupid things like that. That is why I don't like them showing this crap on t.v.
Well I never had ever like actually set in the leaving room and watch the presidential elections or any source of presidential.I alaways thought that its really boring!!! I guess in which I had to choose Obama becasuse what i barley seen I think his a good runner as a president. I thought think that you have to be order to have the intellegents of improving our nation. As long as you know how to run it you should be in Office.
i dont care about the elections. i never take part in them,i get bored way to easy. i would get into them if they were more fun and had more interactive campaigns aimed towards the younger crowds. i dont watch much tv and dont care for news on the computer and never ever looked at a newspaper. but im pretty sure people would choose obama because he presents a change. old people have nothing better to do so they get into polotics.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =Þ =Þ =Þ =Þ =Þ =Þ
Sadly, I'm not following the presidential elections as of right now because I don't really care about politics, or the president. HAH :D Anyway, I think that what networks should do to attract younger viewers is by probably displaying more commercials on T.V. about some of the canidates. I think that young voters like Barack Obama more because he's African American. He's giving little kids hope that someday, if they try, they can be successful in being the first women president, or a different race other than caucasian. I'm not sure why senior citizens are divided between the two MALE candidates. Oh yeah! WHAT ABOUT HILARY CLINTON HARJO!? HMM?! WHERE IS SHE AT IN ALL OF THIS?! Okay just joking. Bye bye. :D
Oh by the way Jose, I THINK HILARY IS HOTTER!!!!
I am TOTALLY kidding.
XD
I dont follow the presidential campaign. My parents tell me things about it and give me what they think should happen. Honestly I dont really care because im not old enough to vote. So what is the point of wanting something to be some way and not be able to vote. And in my house if i say that i want Obama to be president then chances are that i will get slapped. My dad says that Obama is the kind of person that says one thing and then later changes his mind. i really dont care, i just go by what my parents say. i may not always agree but i don't usually say anything. That is just my opinion.
I actually have been following it this time around, through the news, radio, and internet. I'm supporting McCain because he's more resolute with his answers, where as Obama stuggles to answer in a way that will please his supporters. Also, his Foreign Policy sucks. I think that some seniors are unhappy with the way that they've seen this country governed through their lifetime and want change, while others like the way it has been handled.
I like what you had to say Sabastin
I think that the younger people tend to choose Barack Obama, because he will help more with the immigration problems that America is having. And he will be a better influence on America. But sadly to say, i think that Barack Obama will be assasinated, because of his race. A majority of America is racist.
I am trying to watch more of the presidential election. I feel it's important to see who will be leading the United States for the next four years. But i also think that it's really boring to watch and try to understand where they are coming from. So i think that they should try harder to reach younger views.
FNo, i am not currently watching the campaign. I myself think it's very boring. The reason i believe that Obama is more popular among the younger voters is because of how many celebrity support him. When I hear his name from people that I look up to i fell more compeled to look up to him. The reason age 65 and older peoples votes are evenly divided is because they watch the campaign more Because they have nothing else to do rather than sitting around watching T.V.
I usually get my resources from the internet because that is what i am usually on. I always go to yahoo to get my information on the campain, or anything else that i need. But any thing that i need i will go to an internet site to get.
I do not follow politics. I feel that I should, but I don't. I should because this is the future leader of the country I live in. I don't because I feel no need to. Since I am not old enough to vote, I honestly feel that there is no need for me to because even if I did follow politics, I wouldn't be able to let my voice be heard as to who should be president.
Personally, I do feel that even if I could vote, I wouldn't. There is a lot of mud slinging involved in politics. People get so caught up in winning the election that instead of presenting themselves in a positive way, they present their opponents in a negative way. To me that just sounds like a couple of middle school kids that don't like each other. Definitely not something that I would admire in a person, nor look for in a leader.
As to why younger voters prefer Barack Obama, I'll express my opinion on that as well. Since Barack Obama is a younger candidate than John McCain, he has an easier time relating to and getting through to a younger audience whereas McCain is older and gets through to an older audience. Voters aged 65 and older are most probably evenly divided between the two because instead of seeing people as somebody their age that they can relate to, they see the candidates for just what they present. Older people are much wiser and can look past ages to see who the people are and how they would be as a leader.
As far as getting through to a younger audience, that is a difficult feat indeed. But I feel that I may have a solution. Many younger television informed viewers do not have the patience to sit through the debates and speeches that are presented on television. Instead of news stations presenting the entire ordeal, perhaps they could summarize it a little bit. If the viewers could sit through maybe a half of an hour to get the highlights of each candidate, they might actually be more informed and therefore more inclined to vote.
